Type 317 - PN0

SHORT DESCRIPTION - TANK SIGHT GLASSES TYPE 317 FOR UNPRESSURISED VESSELS

Round Tank sight glasses for welding are used to observe and illuminate the interior of closed vessels like tanks, silos and other similar installations. ACI Tank sight glasses of Type 317 are designed based on the established standard DIN 28120 and adapted for unpressurised vessels. The devices consist of two stainless steel flanges fixing the sight glass disc and the gaskets in place. Installation involves cutting an opening into the vessel wall and welding the base flange either onto or into the hull of the vessel. Once the weldment is finished, the glass and gaskets are fixed to the base flange using the cover flange and included fasteners.

Type 317 is, unlike Type 318, 319 or 320, not intended as a pressure retaining part! This devices provides a simple viewport. For this reason, Type 317 is built significantly lighter and thinner than other common sight glass fittings.

Type 317’s fasteners are sunk into the cover flange to avoid protruding parts. This greatly reduces the risk of injuries or damage even in confined spaces.

In spite of the low expected stresses, we manufacture our type 317 from the same high quality stainless steel 1.4571 (316Ti) that our clients have successfully used in their installations for many years. The sight glass window itself is made from reliable borosilicate glass 3.3 according to DIN 7080 and sealed with high quality gasket material specifically chosen for your operation conditions. Our gasket material range includes commonly used materials like graphite with and without sheet metal inlays, KlingerSIL C4400 aramid fibre gaskets, pure PTFE, or rubber materials like NBR.

Just like our other types of tank sight glasses, Type 317 is available with optional accessories like wipers, spray nozzles or light fixtures.

You can learn more technical details about our tank sight glass Type 317 on this page.

The properties of various glass materials are described on page Types of materials in chapter Our offer/Technical glass. The basic types of materials used for the manufacture of sight glasses are: soda-lime glass - widely available, cheap, working temperature up to 280 °C,  borosilicate glass - particularly suitable for use in aggressive environments (acids, alkalis, water vapor), working temperature up to 350 °C, aluminosilicate glass -  working temperature up to 660 °C, glass-ceramics - thermal shock resistant, working temperature up to 750 °C, quartz glass - with a broad spectrum light transmittance (from ultraviolet to infrared), working temperature up to 1100 °C, sapphire products - working temperature up to 2000 °C. To improve the strength, the machined glass is subjected to toughening and annealing. In order to increase the resistance of sight glasses on the aggressiveness of the working environment and in the use of high temperatures and pressures, additional use of mica shield is recommended. Mica disc working as shields are described here.  If you need this solution - please contact us. Round sight glasses are delivered separately or in a set with gaskets. Gaskets for sight glasses are described here. We offer sight glasses manufactured by leading brands such as: Spectraglass, Klinger or Maxos, which guarantees high quality and stability of parameters.   Safety precautions when using sight glass discs: Whenever a sight glass assembly has been taken apart it is urgently recommended in accordance with DIN 7080/ DIN 8902 that the glass disc and gaskets are replaced by new ones. That is particularly important in the case of pressure vessels and/or aggressive media. The following extract from DIN 7080/DIN 8902 text is verbatim: Sight glass discs may only be installed by personnel who have been informed fully about the following requirements: care in handling sight glass discs cleaning of recesses, sight glass discs, gaskets and other parts i. e. removal of foreign bodies (e. g. swarf), prior to installation/reassembly even tightening of retaining bolts Sight glass discs that have been removed after operating use must not be re used. Planned maintenance:Sight glass discs should be included in routine maintenance and periodically checked visually or using ultrasound wall thickness measuring means. In the event of damage, a glass disc must be promptly exchanged, with the plant first having been brought to a standstill. The service life of a sight glass, relative to the particular vessel in which it is mounted, should be established by regular and careful visual check of its condition.Caution: Completely demineralised water may dissolve glass – especially intensive periodical inspection required! Breakage of a sight glass:In spite of careful installation and recommended use, sight glass discs can, on rare occasions, suffer breakage through external influences. In order to prevent the entry of glass particles into products of a critical nature, e. g. foodstuffs, appropriate safety precautions should be taken by the plant manufacturer or user.

SHORT DESCRIPTION - TANK SIGHT GLASSES TYPE 320 ACCORDING TO DIN 28120 The ACI Tank Sight Glass Type 320 is a round tank sight glass to be welded on or into the wall of a pressure vessel. Type 320 is manufactured in full accordance with the construction rules of DIN 28120 and suitable for an operating pressure of PN10 or PN16. Due to DIN conformity Type 320 can easily be installed as a spare part for existing fittings complying with DIN 28120. Our tank sight glass fulfils all standard conditions including full vacuum compatibility and an operating pressure of up to 16 bar. Operating temperatures of up to 280°C are well within range of type 320. If a mica protection sheet is added, safe Operation at up to 300°C is possible! Of course, you can order matching mica sheets directly with your sight glass! Expaning upon the definitions of DIN 28120, we can offer Type 320 with special sizing of DN250 and larger, as well as high temperature compatible quartz windows and of course matching gaskets. Although these variants are not listed in the standard documents, design and manufacturing closely follows the regulations provided in DIN 28120 and DIN 7080, so the stated operating conditions can be completely relied upon. As for all our round tank sight glasses, our type 320 is optionally available with spray nozzles SVI, wipers of type SWI or type SWII (with flexible shaft) or light fixtures with LED or Halogen lights. You can find additional technical data, detailed descriptions and contact information further down on this page!
